Honoring Ruben Salazar's Legacy Through Art and Education
Ruben Salazar High School came to us wanting to honor the man their campus is named after - the pioneering journalist who gave a voice to the Chicano community and whose legacy still runs deep in Pico Rivera. They asked for a portrait of Salazar himself, surrounded by symbols meaningful to the community the school serves.
Step in Steve Martinez, a hyper realism artist whose work is deeply influenced by his own cultural roots. Steve anchored the piece with Salazar's portrait and wove in imagery pulled from the surrounding community. Alongside the install, we hosted student workshops covering the craft of muraling, the business of public art, and the creative careers available to students.
